Leaving Palermo this morning plunges me right back into our Morocco trip. Traffic rules and the overall vibe are pretty similar. We quickly hit the highway toward Messina—yet another incredible stretch of road built on a endless series of tunnels and viaducts. At least you know where those €9 in tolls went: somewhere between Roman engineering, concrete, rebar, and no doubt local "protection."
The soft light, the lush vegetation with its scents of eucalyptus, and the omnipresent mountains transport me right back into Sicilian memories, even if this morning's route was all about efficiency.
Hundreds of tunnels and viaducts.

We had lunch at the tip of Sicily, right across from the Strait of Messina, which we crossed later in the day.
Apart from the ferry crossing across the Strait of Messina, the afternoon was hardly thrilling from a riding standpoint. The coastal views are lovely, but the roads are in a deplorable state. We went bouncing from pothole to pothole all the way to our charming stopover in Tropea.
