Transfa J7 on profite The Transfăgărășan (Take Two): To Hell with Rest!

The Transfăgărășan (Take Two): To Hell with Rest!

Today was supposed to be the famous "rest day."

We were already picturing ourselves lounging peacefully by the hotel pool... But we hadn't factored in just how kid-friendly the place was. Screaming youngsters doing non-stop cannonballs into the main pool—yeah, no thanks! As for the hotel bowling alley? Out of order, according to the front desk. You couldn't make it up!

Never mind: instead of napping, we geared up, pulled out the bikes, and decided to ride all the way back to the top. A quick 100 km round trip "just for the fun of it."

Along the way, we ran into our teddy bear buddies again, still faithfully standing guard by the roadside.

Once at the summit, it was the usual circus: a glorious mess of tourists, honking horns, and souvenir shacks. But no matter, mission accomplished: we finally scored the iconic Transfăgărășan sticker to slap on the pannier!

Transfa J6 D-Day de Bekesba à la Transfagarassan à moto D-Day: At the foot of the legendary Transfăgărășan!

D-Day: At the foot of the legendary Transfăgărășan!

After over 2,500 kilometers of swallowing highway miles, here we are at last. Standing at the foot of the famous switchbacks of the Transfăgărășan. What an incredible journey to get here... And icing on the cake: we met a bear in the flesh!

Yet, the day started off on a tight squeeze. Not exactly ahead of schedule leaving this morning, I had to shave off a bit of the initial route. Result: heading straight east toward the Romanian border. Long live Europe and the Schengen area: another ghost border crossed without a single formality!

What followed was a stretch of vast Romanian plains and razor-straight highways. At times, you'd think you were right in the middle of Nevada... or on a backroad in southern Morocco.

The Romanian villages contrast sharply with the Hungarian towns. Here, houses are low-slung, set back from the road, revealing a certain level of poverty. Then, a radical shift in scenery in Certeze: a surreal town lined with Roma palaces as far as the eye can see! The sheer scale of the buildings is staggering, especially considering so many are left as permanent construction sites.

Gradually, the landscape takes shape, the greenery reclaims its space, and rewards us with a sublime hundred kilometers of twists and turns through the hills.

For lunch, a quick stop at a local Bagdad Café of sorts: for €14 a head, we walked away with salad, grilled chicken, sides, drinks, and coffee. Unbeatable! We then hopped onto the A1 to bypass Sibiu and tackle the famous DN7C—the Transfăgărășan.

The layout? Absolutely masterclass. On the other hand, asphalt-wise, it's a completely different story... The road surface is in such a pitiful state that you're constantly clenching your teeth and slaloming between potholes. Needless to say, pure riding enjoyment takes a backseat!

Fortunately, the magic happens on the descent. Spotting bears by the roadside couldn't be simpler: just look out for tourist cars stopped dead in the middle of the road with their hazard lights flashing! A surreal encounter we won't be forgetting anytime soon.

Transfa J5 Budapest

Day 5: Budapest!

It's incredible to think we've made it all the way here on two wheels!

Today, we swallowed a fair amount of highway miles. A calculated and very necessary sacrifice to free up some time and play standard tourists in the old town of Buda. The morning? Three hours of uninspiring fast roads to reach the Hungarian capital.

Then, a sweet surprise as we were leaving the parking garage: the attendant opens the barrier wide with a big smile: "Go right ahead, bikes are on the house today!" A super nice gesture, especially since Hungarians aren't exactly known for being the most expressive or cheerful folks on the continent.

Leaving the city via the ring road brought another unusual moment: coming nose-to-nose with an oversized transport carrying a wheeled armored vehicle. The police officer escorting it on a bike gave us a big, emphatic wave as we rode past. Clearly, the Hungarians had a soft spot for bikers today!

We then set off east again on the M44 highway: brand-new infrastructure, razor-straight, completely deserted, shooting straight toward the horizon across vast agricultural plains. A grand moment of isolation that we managed wisely: you had to have the foresight to fuel up before taking the exit, otherwise you'd be stranded for good... over 130 km without a single gas station!

In the end, quite a great day of riding. And honestly, in 35°C heat in the shade, the highway has at least one redeeming quality: it keeps the air moving!

Tomorrow, it's time for the absolute highlight of the trip: the massive leg to go catch the Transfăgărășan!

Transfa J3 de la Bavière à l'autriche Day 3: From Bavaria to Austria

Day 3: From Bavaria to Austria

Once again, it's a brand-new route we're testing out this year to cross from west to east, from the Bavarian foothills all the way to the far reaches of Austria.

While the Bavarian and Austrian countrysides look similar at first glance, subtle differences jump out at you as the miles roll by: the further east you push into Austria, the simpler and almost more rustic the landscape becomes, far removed from Bavarian opulence.

The backroads picked off the map turned out to be super enjoyable and beautifully smooth. Sure, we had to put up with a few valley-floor transitions to connect the mountain ranges, but that's all part of the game!

Icing on the cake for the day: crossing the Sölk Pass (Sölkpass), a tasty foretaste of the mountain passes waiting for us further down the road. A statue of Saint Christopher—the patron saint of travelers—was waiting patiently for us at the summit. A nice little nod and a bloody good omen for the rest of the adventure!

Transfa J2 Porsche Day 2: From the Black Forest to Stuttgart (and a small offering to the German police!)

Day 2: From the Black Forest to Stuttgart (and a small offering to the German police!)

This morning started off with a royal warm-up on a section of the legendary B500: that magnificent ribbon of asphalt winding through the Black Forest before beginning the descent down into the valley.

Unfortunately, the throttle had to settle down pretty quickly... Time to fork off onto the expressways to hit an eagerly awaited pilgrimage of the trip: the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. In Germany, lane-filtering through traffic jams remains a risky business: the habit of pulling over to let bikes through isn't exactly ingrained in local drivers!

Bumping along through the traffic, we finally pulled up to our destination. The visit is well worth the stop: the bold architecture of the building is just as impressive as the gems displayed inside. Absolute favorite went to Prost's McLaren-TAG Porsche: the golden age of F1, an iconic single-seater, and a Marlboro livery dripping with pure class. We had lunch right there at the cafeteria, sitting on the terrace shaded by the museum's massive cantilever. A great moment.

The early afternoon put our nerves back on edge: crawling out of the Stuttgart metro area in the scorching heat amid heavy traffic was a complete slog. Thankfully, the Bavarian countryside soon reclaimed its space, offering a much more breathable landscape.

Story of the day? A Mercedes catches fire on the highway, road completely blocked off. No second thoughts, classic biker instinct: we carefully filter up the line... straight into the arms of a police officer waiting for us at the end, ticket book in hand! Total damage for the infraction: a €15 fine. At that price, we're still laughing about it, and it'll make one hell of a story to tell over drinks for the next ten years!

Ending the day on a high note: the approach south of Munich along the lake road is simply sublime. To cap off the picture, our evening stop in a former monastery (Kloster) is an absolute gem.
