After a well-deserved, refreshing break at Hotel Adia in Dolenjske Toplice, it was time to hit the road again toward Austria. For a change from our traditional crossing via the Loibl Pass (Loiblpass) / Wurzen Pass, this time we tried entering from Slovenia through the wide Drava Valley. A real treat: the valley is broad, lush, and the road flows exceptionally well.
After a quick detour on the highway to bypass the Klagenfurt area, we headed straight for the famous Nockalmstraße. The toll comes in at €18: at that price, it better deliver! The verdict? Sublime. A smooth, beautifully twisty layout sweeping through the national park.
What followed was a long—very long—transition, pleasant nonetheless, taking us to the foot of the giant: the Grossglockner. Second toll of the day, and this one stings a bit more: €36 for the climb. Even though it's our 5th time here, the magic never fails.
We took our time to soak it all in: a glance at the glacier, a well-deserved Kaiserschmarrn, a quick beer, and the inevitable gear talk with fellow riders intrigued by the trailer!
The catch? We still had nearly a 2-hour ride ahead to reach Gerlos, and the clock was ticking. Time to twist the throttle and lay down some real speed. Result: wrapped up in 1 hour and 40 minutes, just in time to sit down for dinner!
Day summary: 500 km on the clock. The girls were looking a bit wiped after such a long day in the saddle, but between the guys, there was only one phrase on our lips: "Damn, what an incredible ride!"
